Technology Infrastructure Services

Technology Infrastructure Services (TIS), formerly known as TII, provides the foundational utilities, hardware, software, user training and support systems which are prerequisites for the full implementation of the CSU’s Integrated Technology Strategy (ITS). The TIS mission is “to support the mission of the University through the provision of a reliable, secure technology infrastructure by leveraging system-wide resources.”

  • ITS-TII: Status & Directions
Developed in the fall of 1998, the ITS-TII: Status & Directions document describes the original components of the Technology Infrastructure Initiative. In 2004, the department was restructured and renamed Technology Infrastructure Services (TIS) to reflect a foundation of integrated services rather than a sequence of initiatives. While some of the details have changed, this document continues to serve as the definitive statement of the principles, goals, and outcomes of TIS.
  • Campus Network Infrastructure Projects
Coordinated closely with the Stage I physical infrastructure build-out (physical spaces, pathways, and cabling), the Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project (ITRP) will provide all campuses with a robust, high performance network infrastructure that meets or exceeds system-wide baseline standards by 2006. The Network Infrastructure Asset Management System (NIAMS) project utilizes sophisticated software to manage and track the new equipment. A related program, Network Management Systems (NMS), utilizes a standard suite of tools that includes a centralized database and distributed fault monitoring systems at each campus.
  • Identity and Access Management Initiative (IAM)
The Identity and Access Management Initiative (IAM), formerly the Secure Identity Management Infrastructure (SIMI), is a policy and technology framework that will enable online transactions between the University and members of the University community, and between the University and other institutions such that institutional data is protected from unauthorized access and personal privacy is maintained. Supported by broad-based campus participation, IAM is intended to guide each campus in the development and deployment of a set of identity management tools. In addition, IAM will establish policy bodies composed of academic, administrative and technology leaders from the campuses and the Office of the Chancellor, charged with coordinating the development of system-wide identity management policy and practice.
  • Network Security Services
TIS’ role in the system-wide effort to enhance security is to support the development of security tools and practices as they relate to campus networking and to assist the security components of the ITRP campus network infrastructure Standard Operating Environment (SOE).
  • Testing & Evaluation Center (TEC)
The Testing & Evaluation Center, located at the WestEd facility in Los Alamitos, supports the development and maintenance of the CSU’s campus network Standard Operating Environment (SOE). In short, the lab allows for a controlled testing environment where changes to the SOE such as new network components, applications, and upgrades can be tested before implementation.
  • IT Services and Product Contracts
In order to facilitate the provision of cost effective IT operations and support services, the CSU has entered into a number of agreements for related goods and services. These include software and hardware purchasing agreements as well as agreements for technical and professional services.
  • Technology Standards
The key to implementing system wide technology initiatives is the establishment of appropriate technology standards and guidelines. To that end, members of the CSU technology community have developed a number of standards and guidelines ranging from physical infrastructure planning standards to campus network design standards and guidelines.
  • TIS Performance Metrics
Building campus networks and other related infrastructures is only one facet of the Technology Infrastructure Services. Just as important is the development and implementation of network performance metrics. This process is in its formative stages, however, the Network & Technology Alliance is developing performance metrics related to network operations and maintenance.
  • External Relationships
In keeping with our position as the largest public four-year university in the country, the California State University is engaged in a number of technology related activities with other educational institutions.
